A demonstration by firefighters in Belgium turned violent when protesters clashed with police. The two services, which are more accustomed to working together, fought a pitched battle in the streets of Brussels with water cannon and foam hoses.
The firefighters are striking over pay and conditions.
“We want recognition of the fact that our profession is a dangerous one,” said one protester.
“The profession of a firefighter is apparently still not a high risk profession, even though a lot of people are unable to work due to work-related accidents and sometimes they even die.”
Two police officers and three demonstrators were injured in the disturbances.
