Airbus workers strike hours before cuts are unveiled

Workers at an Airbus factory in France have staged a mass walk-out hours before extensive job losses are due to be outlined. It is likely the plant will close, or be sold, under a radical restructuring plan. In Hamburg workers wait in trepidation to see exactly what the “Power 8” cost cutting plan will contain when unveiled later today.

Factories in both France and Germany will be casualties of the cuts. Jobs may also be lost in Spain and the United Kingdom. Airbus sub-contractors are also expected to be badly hit as Airbus seeks to limit staff losses.

Unions Europe-wide are threatening strike action. The restructuring follows a dramatic decline at Airbus. Mistakes on the superjumbo project have seen Boeing return as market leader.
