Protest in Madrid over cutting of ETA jail term

Victims of terrorism have taken to the streets of Madrid in Spain over the cutting of an ETA prisoner’s jail term. A leading member of the armed Basque separatist group had his sentence cut from 12 years to three by the Supreme Court. Inaki de Juana Chaos has been on a hunger strike and his condition has deteriorated.

He was sentenced over articles he’d published, but earlier spent 20 years in jail over the murders of 25 people. A Spanish newspaper reported on Saturday that Juana Chaos had ended his hunger strike after his sentence was cut. That has been denied by the prison service and his lawyer. The prisoner has been calling for the government to restart efforts for peace talks with ETA.
