French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are meeting today for talks overshadowed by a row over European plane maker Airbus. Other topics of discussion include Iran’s nuclear programme, the Middle East peace process and a March summit of the European Union, whose rotating presidency Germany currently holds.

While it is unlikely they will delve into the details of the Airbus dispute, it is expected to be on their agenda. Thousands of job cuts are looming at factories in both countries after wiring problems with the firm’s flagship A380 jumbo-jet.
