Iranian missile tests heighten tension in nuclear row

Iran has test fired missiles as tensions mount over the country’s nuclear programme.

It comes just two days before a UN Security Council deadline for Tehran to halt uranium enrichment or face further economic sanctions.

The missile tests are part of Iran’s largest military exercises in almost a year.

Analysts say the war games are aimed at show-casing Iran’s military capabilites in the face of mounting US pressure.

Washington has recently sent a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf.

The US and other western nations fear Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, and have persuaded the UN to impose economic sanctions on the country.

The UN has said it will consider additional sanctions from Wednesday if Tehran continues to defy it.

Iran says its atomic programme is aimed only at producing electricity.
