A Chinese film about a woman who struggles to support her family on the steppes of Mongolia has scored a surprise victory at the Berlin Film Festival. Tuya’s Marriage is the second Chinese film to win the top accolade at a major film festival in less than six months after Still Life won the Golden Lion in Venice in September.
Runner-up “The Other”, by Argentinian director Ariel Rotter, is the slow-paced account of a man who goes through a mid-life crisis when he discovers his partner is pregnant. It stars Argentinian actor Julio Chavez who was also named Best Actor. Best Actress went to Germany’s Nina Hoss for Yella, a movie about a woman who changes her life but is still haunted by her past.
The cast of Robert de Niro’s The Good Sheperd – one of the critics’ favourites – won a joint award for exceptional artistic performance. Best Director went to Israeli director Joseph Cedar for “Beaufort”.
