It is party time in Rio as the Brazilian’s city’s uniquely spectacular carnival gets underway. In keeping with tradition the festivities were launched by the man chosen to be ‘King Momo’, or the ‘Lord of Misrule’ who will lead the celebrations. His role is to keep the party-mood going during the five days of fiesta.
The job may be a little harder this year because of an upsurge of urban violence which has cast a shadow over events. King Momo urged people to forget their worries. “I’m ordering you to party”, he said. Authorities say the recent trouble has not deterred the usual huge numbers of foreign visitors.
