In the face of continuing violence and a Congressional vote against her president’s Iraq policy Condeleeza Rice has paid another visit to Baghdad. The US Secretary of State travelled to the Iraqi capital twice last year on diplomatic missions. Her trip this time is also partly intended to congragulate security forces for a crackdown on inusrgents that appears to have had initial success.
But the bloodshed has continued elsewhere. Around ten poeple are reported to have been killed in a double bomb attack in the northern city of Kirkuk. Scores were wounded when the explosions ripped through a crowded market in a predominantly Kurdish area of the ethnically mixed city. The security operation in Baghdad is meant to combat sectarian violence, such as this appears to be.
