Bush accuses Iran of supplying weapons to Iraqi fighters

The US President, George W Bush, has insisted a branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards is linked to some attacks on US troops in Iraq.

“I can say with certainty that the Quds force, a part of the Iranian government, has provided these sophisticated IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) that have harmed our troops,” he said.

“I would like to repeat, I do not know whether or not the Quds forces was ordered from the top echelons of government, but my point is, what’s worse? Them ordering it and it happening, or them not ordering it and it happening,” he added.

Bush denied that he was laying the groundwork for an attack on Iran. He also stressed the need to maintain pressure on Tehran over its nuclear programme.

“I want to make sure that, in the Iranian issue, that the whole world stays engaged. I believe that’s a more effective way of convincing the Iranians to give up their nuclear weapons ambitions,” he said.
