Reaction following the Stuttgart court’s decision to free Mohnhaupt has been mixed. The Bavarian interior minister Gunter Beckstein criticised the ruling. Others, like Claudia Roth of the Green Party, said the decision showed strength as the Red Army Faction no longer posed any threat.
However Konrad Freiberg chairman of the Federal police officers federation said:
“The police have a different take on the release,we are concerned, the Red Army Faction hunted down and killed 10 police officers. The victims are still around, they still feel the pain from that time. The police are sceptical and I admit slightly bitter.”
The Red Army Faction which disbanded in 1998 is suspected of killing 34 people between 1972 and 1991.
The decision to release Mohnhaupt comes as President Horst Koehler considers a pardon for Christian Klar , who has also served 24 years for his Red Army Faction crimes.
