Israeli and Lebanese troops have exchanged fire over the international border between the two countries, in an incident analysts have described as “serious”. The Israeli Defence Force said its troops were searching for mines in the Israeli-controlled zone near the border when they came under fire.
Four explosive devices had been discovered there earlier in the week. Neither side has reported casualties. Tension flared into violence during last summer’s 34+day war between Israel and Hezbollah militia. Since then the border between Israel and Lebanon has been monitored by a combination of Lebanese government soldiers and with UN troops.
Israel claims the explosives found were recently planted, despite the continuing ceasefire. Hezbollah has denied this, saying the devices had been there since last summer’s fighting.
