Austrian police crack online paedophile ring

world news

| |

Police in Vienna have uncovered a global internet child porn ring, the biggest such find in Austrian criminal history. Videos showing what is described as “the worst kind of sexual abuse of children” were thought to have been filmed in eastern Europe. The images then passed through Britain and Russia before ending up on a host website in Austria. Leading police internet expert Harald Gremel said that in a 24-hour period, authorities recorded more than 8,000 hits on the website. This left a trail of over 2,360 computer addresses from 77 countries, principally the US and Germany.

No arrests have yet been made, but 14 people being questioned by police have admitted downloading the images, which included children as young as five. Seized material will now be pooled with international police agencies as they strive to bring about prosecutions.
