For the first time in three months, Cuban television has shown new images of the country’s ailing President Fidel Castro. The footage was taken last Monday and shows the 80-year-old meeting his counterpart and supporter, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Castro appeared to be in better health, but still somewhat fragile. He was last seen in shots dating from October, where he seemed to be very weak and walking with difficulty.
Castro is seen joking with Chavez; “As I have said, this is far from being a lost battle.” he quipped.
Castro handed power to his brother Raul exactly six months ago, following surgery for stomach problems. He has not been seen in public since then, and the exact nature of his illness and state of his health are treated as state secrets by the authorities.
