The Israelis say they believe Palestinian militants were planning to use the tunnel to carry out further attacks inside Israel. The operation is the first in Gaza since a truce was announced between Palestinian militant groups and Israel in late November. The blowing up of the tunnel comes a day after a suicide bomber killed three people in a bakery in Eilat.
The attack came just days before Middle East negotiators were due to hold talks in Washington to try to revive peace efforts. A security camera in a fast food restuarant next door to the bakery captured the exact moment of the blast.
