Israeli President asks for a "leave of absence"

The Israeli President Moshe Katsav appears to have bowed to public pressure over his ongoing sex scandal and asked Parliament for a temporary “leave of absence”. The move came after prosecutors announced that they intended to indict Katsav on charges of rape and abuse of power, and after members of the Knesset started collecting the necessary signatures to start impeachment procedures. 61-year-old Katsav insists he is innocent and is refusing to resign. While he remains president he enjoys immunity from prosecution. His term is due to end this July.
