The gastronomic olympics are underway in the French city of Lyon. Chefs from 12 countries will contest a series of titles, including World Cheese Champion and Best Baker. But the highlight of the 13th annual Conference of Catering, billed as Europe’s biggest, is the coveted “Bocuse d’Or” award. 1000 spectators will watch 24 chefs battle it out for the honour, named after Lyon’s internationally renowned chef.
Serge Vieira, is a former winner and now President of the jury: “This is the contest’s 20th year. All the teams have worked hard and the standard is high. This is sometimes not the case on the first day, but this year we have been pleasantly surprised.”, he said.
The contestants must create a fish and meat dish in less than five and a half hours, watched by the eagle-eyed judges.
The final will take place later today.
