EU-Russia summit focuses on energy issues

The EU-Russia summit between Germany’s Angela Merkel and Russian President Putin has focussed on energy issues. Merkel said communication had to be improved, Putin said efforts are being stepped up.

“I want to to stress our growing cooperation in the energy sector. Russia and Germany are interested in safe guarding European and global energy security. A forum on this is being planned between Russian and German energy companies for April this year,” he said.

They also said there was progress on foreign policy issues. The German Chancellor said they both supported the Middle East Quartet of international mediators.

She said: “There is perfect agreement between us concerning the continuation of the Middle East peace process. It is important in future talks to find a solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority based on respect for the road map.”

On Kosovo, Putin said he would only back international proposals on resolving its status if they were acceptable to Belgrade and Pristina.

This raises the question of a possible Russian veto on international proposals in the UN Security Council.
