US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says he may support sending more American troops to Afghanistan. Gates has been in the country since Monday, holding talks with US military leaders there. They say they expect Taliban insurgency to intensify. Gates told reporters: “I think it is important that we not let this success here in Afghanistan slip away from us and that we keep the initiative. There’s no reason to sit back and let the Taliban regroup and threaten the progress that’s been made.”
Evidence that the Taliban has already been regrouping is not hard to find. A bombing in Kandahar coincided with Gates’ arrival in the country. And every day there are fresh reports of bloodshed and violence. It is thought the insurgency is coming from the lawless borderlands inside neighbouring Pakistan.
