A weapons destruction facility has opened in the west of Ukraine. It is part of a NATO project that aims to get rid of hundreds of thousands of guns and ammunition. William Taylor is the US ambassador to Ukraine: “This is a 12-year project that is focused on eliminating weapons that are both hazards to the people in this area, where they would be stored, but are also hazards to people around the world because people with bad intentions can get hold of weapons that can shoot down air planes, or weapons that can shoot people”.
Taylor says each of the main projects run by NATO has a country that coordinates it, and the US is the lead nation for this programme at the moment. NATO, Ukraine and several other countries are paying for the destruction of the weapons.
