The head of Israel’s armed forces, Lieutenant Dan Halutz, has resigned. The news comes in the light of investigations into last summer’s war with Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon. Several internal inquiries are being conducted into the government and the army’s handling of the 34-day conflict, sparked when guerillas captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others. The military was widely criticised for failing to achieve its war aims, including retrieving the men.
Several senior IDF officers held Halutz responsible for the failures of the war when they testified before the investigation committee. The Deputy Chief of Staff, Moshe Kaplinsky, will act as the interim head of the military.
