Emergencies in US states hit by deadly rain and snow

Severe winter weather is continuing to cause chaos across much of the United States. A huge storm front bearing down from the north-east has left a trail of ice and snow with more than 40 people reported killed in half a dozen states. From Missouri to Oklahoma, utility crews have been working around the clock to restore power to thousands of homes.

The cold snap has even stretched as far east as California, freezing orange groves and forcing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency in ten counties. Authorities say damage to citrus crops alone could come close to a billion dollars. Sub-zero temperatures have also affected Iowa, Texas and Arkansas. The storm has largely blown out but forecasters say they expect more freezing rain overnight.
