Austria’s new government has been sworn in at a ceremony in Vienna. The so-called grand coalition brings together parties from the left and right. It is headed by Alfred Gussenbauer of the Social Democrats who marginally defeated the conservatives in October’s general election. The deal to form a government was struck earlier this week after months of wrangling over policy and the share-out of cabinet positions.
Outside the palace where the investiture was taking place, students protested against the new government. The demonstration was over university fees.
