Shortly after ETA released its statement, the Spanish government said its hardline position would remain unchanged. Speaking at a news conference, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said that ETA only had one option – to end violence, but he declined to comment further until he had seen the statement himself.

However he went a step further in an interview for Tuesday’s New York Times. Rubalcaba accused ETA of having a “murderous and psychopathic logic”, adding there “will never again be another credible truce with ETA”. With the Prime Minister to address parliament on Monday, Rubalcaba has begun talks with his opposition counterpart in a bid to gain cross-party support for the government’s position.
