Police detained two suspected ETA members in southern France, the first arrests since the airport bombing. It is unclear whether the arrests were linked to the December 30 attack. But Spanish officials say one of the men escaped from their surveillance after receiving an SMS saying that explosives had been found elsewhere in the Basque country.
It is thought the man in question fled following the discovery of bomb-making material in Atxondo. He has been named as Asier Larrinaga. The other man in custody is Garikoitz Etxeberria. Since the Madrid airport attack, police have found stashes of explosives including parts that could make limpet bombs, which ETA has typically used to blow up cars.
