A row has erupted over a 60 euro motorway toll between Romania and Bulgaria. After a blockade by angry truck drivers near the town of Giurgiu in southern Romania, officials have decided to suspend the charge while complaints are looked into. The fee was put in place a year ago by local authorities as an ecological charge.
But road transport groups claim the toll is illegal and unjustified now the two countries are in the European Union. They have the backing of some politicians in Bulgaria. It is reported the mayor of Giurgiu was ordered by Bucharest to suspend the toll, pending further investigation. Those blocking the route were allowed to go without paying, with the promise that meetings will be held to try to resolve the dispute.
