The postponement of Albania’s municipal elections planned for January 20 has been confirmed by the country’s election commission. This because of a dispute between the government and opposition over preparations for the ballot. Earlier this week the European Union warned Albania that failure to hold democratic local elections could harm its progress towards EU membership. Prime Minister Sali Berisha had said the polls would be held on February 18. Part of the dispute is over who is eligible to cast a ballot.
