Sarkozy visits Corsica hours after bomb blasts

France’s Interior Minister has announced a billion euro package for Corsica just hours after suspected separatists set off a series of bombs on the Mediterranean island. Nicolas Sarkozy, who is also a candidate in forthcoming presidential elections, made the announcement during a visit to the French territory.

One man died and another was injured when a bomb they had allegedly planted went off prematurely last night. The dead man was identified as a member of a hardline Corsican nationalist group. The attacks target six premises regarded as symbols of French control of the island.

Security was tightened for the visit. Four local politicians refused to meet Sarkozy, saying he was involving affairs of state in the presidential electoral campaign.
