Uncertainty over execution date in Iraq

As uncertainty continues over the execution date of two of his co-accused, new video images of the funeral of Saddam Hussein have emerged. It shows distraught followers carrying the body before its burial near Tikrit. Many Sunnis in Iraq have expressed outrage at the taunting of Saddam by guards and officials during his execution. The imminent execution of the two men sentenced with him could fan the flames. It had been reported that that would happen today but the Iraqi government has said no date has been set. Other reports say Barzan al-Tikriti, Saddam’s half brother will be hung along with Awad al-Bander on Sunday. All three were convicted over the massacre of 148 Shi’ite villagers.

Italy has said it will campaign at the UN to have the executions halted. The world body has already called on Baghdad not to carry them out. Even if new Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon appeared ambiguous. “The issue of capital punishment is for each and every member state to decide, “ he said on Wednesday. But a spokesman has since said Moon does support the abolition of the death penalty in line with long-standing UN policy.
