Mobile phone images of Saddam Hussein’s execution have emerged on the Internet, showing that he had angry exchanges with his executioners before his death. An official tape was released yesterday without sound, and cut off before the actual moment of death.
These new pictures, grainy in quality, do show the actual death. “Go to hell,” someone is heard yelling. Someone also yells out the name Moqtada several times. This refers to a radical Shi’ite cleric whose father was murdered in 1999 by gunmen suspected of being agents of Saddam’s once dominant Sunni Arab minority. Saddam’s family says he has been buried in his home village near Tikrit. Earlier, a government official had said the body would be buried in a secret location to prevent the site becoming a place of pilgrimage for militant supporters.
