Ford controversy over Nixon pardon

As mourning for Gerald Ford gets underway in Palm Desert, California, a posthumously published interview with the former US president has stirred up fresh controversy over the pardon he granted to his impeached predecessor Richard Nixon.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Ford said he was motivated to grant the pardon by his longstanding friendship with Nixon – he had always previously said he’d judged the case impartially and had been swayed by the need for America to heal its wounds after the upheaval of the Watergate case.

Ford, who died on Tuesday aged 93, also criticised vice president Dick Cheney for his handling of the war in Iraq – Cheney rose through the ranks under Ford and will be an honorary pallbearer at Wednesday’s funeral.
