Explosion in Spain raises fears ETA ceasefire is over

An explosion in Spain has raised fears that a ceasefire declared by the armed Basque separatist group ETA could be over. A car bomb has exploded in a parking lot at Madrid’s international airport. Two police officers are said to have been slightly hurt in the blast.

Officials say terminal four of the Barajas airport was evacuated after a telephone warning to authorities in the Basque country. State radio reports that a separate caller claiming to be a member of ETA has claimed responsibility. The armed group declared a ceasefire in March, and the government then said it would start a peace process.

However, ETA recently warned that it would break off contact unless there was immediate progress in separate talks over the future of the Basque country.
