Turkmenistan will hold a presidential election on February 11th. A so-called People’s Assembly decided unanimously for the Central Asian nation of five million people. The vote will be held to choose a replacement for authoritarian President Saparmurat Niyazov. The president-for-life’s term ended suddenly last week, when he died. He had ruled for 21 years. Foreign observers are following events closely, given their interest in Turkmenistan’s rich gas reserves.
