Eight US Marines have been charged over the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha last year. It is being described as the biggest criminal case to emerge from the war in Iraq in terms of those killed. The Marine Corp announced the decision late on Thursday. Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich has been charged with the murder of 12 Iraqis. mHis father Dave said his son was no murderer.
“My wife and I and all his friends feel that he’s innocent, that he did what he had to do at the time. It is no easy thing over there. Like he says, people at home don’t know what it’s like over there until you’re there.” Lance Corporal Justin Sharratt has been charged with three murders. His father Darryl said he was very proud of his son.
“He’s my hero. I mean, that’s it, he is a great marine.” According to the charges, a group of marines went on the rampage in the town of Haditha after a roadside bomb had killed one of their comrades. In all, 24 were killed including a 76-year-old man and a three-year-old child.
