More fighting has broken out between the forces of Hamas and Fatah. Gunmen loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah shot at Hamas members in the occupied West Bank, wounding at least two people, hospital officials and witnesses said. They said the gunmen opened fire as about 200 Hamas activists and armed men were preparing for a rally in the city of Nablus. Violence between the rival factions has erupted since Mahmoud Abbas called for early elections a week ago.
The two sides agreed on a ceasefire in Gaza earlier this week following days of fighting. In an earlier incident, this time in Gaza City, a local resident was killed during a gunbattle between Hamas and a local clan which occurred overnight. According to reports, the fighting, which included the use of rocket propelled grenades, was so fierce that residents hid their children in their bathtubs to protect them from flying bullets.
