In a speech to the Palestinian people, President Mahmoud Abbas urged them to show responsibility and restraint. He defended his decision to call early elections – a move opposed by Hamas. Despite this, he said he was willing to resume talks with the group to form a new national unity government.

He also confirmed he is preparing to meet Israeli leader Ehud Olmert. It comes amid reports that Israel is considering handing over to Abbas millions of euros in withheld Palestinian tax funds.
