The Palestinian prime minister has rejected the president’s call for new elections. Ismail Haniyeh warned new polls could cause greater unrest in the West Bank and Gaza. “The call for early parliamentary elections is not constitutional and it may lead to a large disturbance in the Palestinian territory,” he said.
President Mahmoud Abbas met with the Palestinian electoral commission to working on planning the poll. But an aide has said elections could not take place until mid-2007. Abbas must first issue a presidential decree and then wait for electoral rolls to be updated. Hamas says the president has no authority to call early elections.
