Nine square metre gingerbread map of enlarged EU

EU-celebrants ahead of a leaders’ summit have mapped out January’s enlargement of the bloc in ginger-bread. This will be the European Union’s last summit with 25 Member States. Romania and Bulgaria are joining this January, adding pieces 26 and 27. But the commissioner for enlargement preparations underscored the job is far from a piece of cake. The heads of state and government gathering for today and tomorrow’s talks, to reassure wary voters, are set to toughen their tone towards aspiring new members. At the same time the leaders want to avoid discouraging countries which hope to join the EU in the future.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the EU must ensure that new entrants meet the criteria fully.
