There’s chaos on the Israeli-Egyptian border after Israel prevented Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh from returning to Gaza. Dozens of Hamas militants attempted to storm the frontier checkpoint to protest against the authorities’ decision. Haniyeh was returning from a two week fundraising tour abroad. Israel said he had some 35 million US dollars in cash with him and that they didn’t want the money crossing the frontier, for fear it would be used to fund terrorist activities. Negotiations are underway to allow the Hamas leader to cross the border – with the money staying in an Egyptian bank account. Haniyeh reportedly raised some 250 million euros in pledges on a tour that included Qatar, Iran and Sudan.
