Germany has appealed to Syria to help maintain Lebanon’s stability and use its influence to promote the Middle East peace process. Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier made the appeal to Syria’s President Assad at a meeting in Damascus.
The move represents a thawing in Germany’s policy towards Syria.
“After nearly a quarter of a century your country has re-established diplomatic relations with the neighbouring state of Iraq. And of course I would wish for the same with regard to Lebanon,” Germany’s foreign minister said.
Germany, along with other European nations, has tried to isolate Syria following the assassination of the Lebanese Prime Minster Rafik al-Hariri last year.
Syria was accused of involvement.
