Socialist French presidential candidate Segolène Royal is in the Middle East in a bid to boost her foreign policy credentials ahead of April’s election. Sunday saw her meet with Mahmoud Abbas, giving her the chance to pledge her unfaltering support for the Palestinian President.
Royal stressed the difficulty the region’s leaders face in setting up a sovereign Palestinian state and a lasting peace in Israel.
As Royal cuts her teeth on the international stage, she faces criticism at home for a meeting in Lebanon on Friday.
She failed to react when a Hezbollah official drew comparisons between Israel and Germany’s Nazi regime. She claims she did not hear the remarks despite them being addressed to her directly
