The Pope has held the first mass of his four-day trip to Turkey. Benedict XVI is in the Aegean town of Ephesus where the Virgin Mary is believed to have lived out the last days of her life. The holy site is visited by tens of thousands of Christians and Muslims every year. The pontiff’s next stop is Istanbul where he is to meet the Greek Orthodox Patriarch. Though the Pope’s trip has been overshadowed by a row over his views on Islam, one of the pontiff’s priorities in Turkey is to heal another rift and thaw relations between the Catholic and the Orthodox church.
