Iraqi militants claim F16 crash

It is being reported two Iraqi militant groups have claimed responsibility for bringing down a US F16 near Fallujah north of Baghdad in Iraq. The US army has confirmed one of its planes crashed on a combat mission. The pilot is believed to have died. Footage filmed by a local cameraman shows a body lying in the wreckage wearing what appears to be a parachute harness. The crash comes amid escalating violence in Baghdad and the Baquba province.

Pipelines were blown up on Monday, the latest in a series of attacks that have crippled refineries and caused fuel shortages. In Baquba, the bodies of dozens of men including teenagers were found shot in the head. They showed signs of torture. In the capital itself the death toll continues to rise by the day as a result of what the US media has started describing as a civil war – a term which the White House rejects, saying violence in Iraq is “entering a new phase”.
