Child labour or paper-round pocketmoney? Dutch messenger and delivery service TNT are in hot water with German union ver.di over their advert in North Rhine Westphalia for delivery boys aged…13. According to TNT the boys will deliver catalogues and brochures at between 10 and 15 euros for a three-hour stint.
ver.di said a line had been crossed, setting up what it called a “distribution network with child labour”. TNT have rolled out a poster campaign across the German state, and add the boys will only work with parental permission. ver.di, which has strong links with Deutsche Post, fighting off TNT for the traditional postal market, complains this undercuts postman’s rates of over 10 euros an hour. The union adds TNT workers would pay no social security charges, unlike salaried staff.
