Rapturous applause, standing ovations and chants of “Segolene – President”, that was the enthusiastic welcome from the socialists as they crowned their candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. In her speech to the more than 1000 party faithful, Segolene Royal promised to make France a fairer place if she were elected the country’s first ever woman head of state:
“Help me along this path. Help me rebuild, to accelerate our new shared momentum. I am calling out today to all French men and women in our country – let’s come together, let’s rally ourselves and help each other to serve France.”
The socialist presidential candidate also said that education would be central if she were elected president. The investiture follows a ballot ten days ago where party members overwhelmingly voted for Royale – leaving her two more experienced rivals trailing behind.
