It has been a day of high emotion in the home town of slain Lebanese industry minister, Pierre Gemayel. Thousands crowded the streets of Bekfaya as the 34-year-old’s coffin was brought home. And his father, former President Amin Gemayel, joined those voicing suspicions that Syria may have been behind his assassination.
Gemayel was killed on Tuesday when gunmen ambushed his car and shot him at point blank range. In Bekfaya, huge crowds queued from dawn till dusk outside the Gemayel ancestral home to say farewell to the Maronite Christian politician. Locals are hailing him a hero, killed to prevent Lebanon’s sectarian groups from living in peace. Wednesday was Independence Day in Lebanon, but planned celebrations were cancelled – instead three days of mourning have been declared.
