The Israeli cabinet agreed on Wednesday to continue military operations in Gaza. The decision came amid a spate of rocket attacks launched from Gaza. An attack in Sderot did little but cause shock, but two Israelis have been killed this week by Palestinian rockets. As the cabinet was debating its decision Israeli troops began advancing into northern Gaza. This latest attack is part of an offensive aimed at Palestinian militants who fire missiles across the Gaza border into nearby Israeli towns.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the incursion as “aggressive”. But he has a difficult time controlling the various Palestinian factions and is trying to persude them to agree on a truce with Israel. More than 370 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since it began its offensive in Gaza , half of them civilians, hospital officials said.
Three Israeli soldiers have also died.
