US President George W Bush has offered backing for Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s government in Lebanon, after the assassination of Cabinet Minister Pierre Gemayel. “We support the Siniora government and its democracy,” President Bush said. “And we support the Lebanese people’s desire to live in peace and we support their efforts to defend their democracy against attempts by Syria, Iran and allies to foment instability and violence in that important country.”
President Bush has also called for a full investigation to identify what he calls “those people and those forces” behind the killing. There was condemnation and support too from the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana.
“I want to see with all my soul the person responsible for this horrible crime brought in front of justice,” Javier Solana said. “And I want to remember at this point with all my heart the many people who have been fighting for the independence and sovereignty of Lebanon.”
Syria and Iran too have denounced the assassination.
