Resuming full diplomatic relations for the first time in a quarter of a century – Syria and Iraq’s foreign ministers have agreed to restore ties severed when Damascus backed Tehran in the Iran-Iraq war. It comes amid diplomatic efforts to try to involve Iraq’s neighbours in helping curb violence there.

Bilateral talks between Iraq’s president and his Iranian counterpart are due in Tehran this weekend. Iraqi sources claim the Syrian president has also been invited for talks in Iran. Meanwhile, violence continues to tear Iraq apart. In the capital Baghdad alone, more than a dozen people were killed on Tuesday.
