Police in Britain are investigating the suspected poisoning of a former Russian spy. Aleksander Litvinenko, who defected to the UK six years ago, is reportedly fighting for his life in a London hospital. It is thought he was given thallium – a deadly metal – while looking into the recent murder of a Russian investigative journalist, who had criticised Kremlin policy on the rebellion in Chechnya.
Litvinenko was granted British citizenship last month. He is one of the highest profile defectors from Russia’s Federal Security Service and is on a wanted list in Moscow where he is said to have made powerful enemies with his criticism of President Vladimir Putin.
