APEC leaders unite in concern over N Korea test


Pacific Rim leaders have expressed their strong concern over North Korea’s nuclear test and have called for negotiations to restart. But full details of the statement, made this morning at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Vietnam, were not immediately available as it was only presented verbally, underscoring sensitivities over the issue.

Meanwhile Russia and the United States have signed a deal on bilateral terms for Moscow’s entry to the World Trade Organisation. It removes the last obstacle in Russia’s 13-year quest to join the WTO. President George W Bush is also under pressure from US manufacturers to increase exports to China, as America’s trade deficit with the Asian nation is likely to beat last year’s record. But the Chinese president said US exports to China have jumped 35 per cent so far this year.
